To become self-employed in UK you need to tell HMRC by register as self-employed. This is to allow you to pay tax through Self Assessment and National Insurance contributions. You will have to furnish details like your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number. After you have registered with HMRC, HMRC will send you with a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). If you became self employed after the end of the tax year, you must register by 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you became self employed to avoid penalties
